The Piano Fragments 2013-2023 is a double album of piano fragments by Finnish composer and avant-garde artist Janne Nummela, created for playerpiano or Yamaha Disklavier. The works were not intended by default for a human performer and some of them are possibly inconvenient for performance by a live pianist, but do not pose similar problems for a machine.

All the data was obtained as a result of improvisation, controlled by an algorithm that Janne has been developing for more than 10 years. Some parts were manually adjusted. Some were conceived on paper or in the mind, others are the result of direct improvisation. Algorithmic constraints were set in advance or adjusted in real time.

Despite the long time intervals separating individual compositions by the time of creation, their inherent diversity is compensated by a certain internal consistency - the album is listened to as a complete work, all parts seem well thought out and clearly verified. Despite all its radical avant-garde, music does not obviously contradict traditional classical formats. But it is traditional only in a very conditional sense: the tradition is fictional. We observe here algorithmic deviations from some hypothetical historical models rather than attempts to find a starting point in modern music. "Rather than being the pioneer, I am the last man of the rearguard, setting out with new methods from old starting points along the stream of historical timeline.
